There are many different ways to understand poverty.  While many people think of poverty as having a lack of money and the ability to meet the physical needs for survival, poverty is also impacted by a broad range of personal, social, economic, cultural and political factors.  Poverty can be seen as not having the resources to be able to reach a standard of living that allows people to play roles, participate in relationships and live a life that is seen as normal by the community to which they belong.

There are many reasons as to why people are poor.  Not everyone is born having the same opportunities to succeed in life and enjoy good health.  The daily conditions in which people live have a strong influence on our health and well being such as having access to; healthy foods, safe and affordable housing, good education, transportation and good paying jobs.
