Foundations for a Healthy School

The Foundations for a Healthy School was released by the Ministry of Education in 2014.  It recognizes the connection between health and education.  Healthy students are better learners and education is a key determinant of health.  Efforts to improve one will improve the other.  This resource aligns with the K-12 School Effectiveness Framework.

The Healthy Schools approach weaves health promoting practices in five areas:

  1. Curriculum, teaching and learning
  2. School and classroom leadership
  3. Student engagement
  4. Social and physical environments
  5. Home, school and community partnerships

This comprehensive approach involves all members of the school community including students, parents, school staff, community service agencies and businesses.   Members have the opportunity to share ideas, plan and take action based on the school’s priority needs and can include the following topics:

  1. Physical activity
  2. Healthy eating
  3. Personal safety and injury prevention
  4. Growth and development
  5. Mental health
  6. Substance use, addictions and related behaviours.

The Public Health Nurses on the school team promote the importance of Healthy Schools. Contact your school nurse if you are interested in learning more.
