Turn “The Talk” into a Conversation For Life.

“Where do babies come from?” This question can often raise fear in any parent.

Talking about it early can change your child’s sexual future. Talking about sex helps to keep your child as safe as possible and will create a bond between parent and child that will provide a source of support and love as your child grows into an adult.

It’s no surprise that many parents opt to keep sexual health information a secret. Many parents strive to protect their children from life’s reality and the reality of growing up. And so, children grow up hearing about sex from their peers and parents have little control over school yard talk and urban legends.

When left to discover sex without the proper knowledge and preparation, sex can become risky.

Parents need to matter more than peers. Talking about sex is more than just talking about the mechanics.

A few ways you can start the talk today:

• Talk about the Body: discuss your values, your child’s development, healthy body image, puberty, and inappropriate touching.
• Talk about the Mind: discussing family values, guiding decisions, sexual orientation, hormones, and emotional changes
• Talk about the Media: discuss media and body image, sex on TV and in movies, and being safe online.
• Talk about Friends and Influences: getting to know your child’s friends, peer pressure.
• Talk about Romantic Relationships: sex and intimacy, sexual risk, protection, contraception and sexual decisions.
• Talk about Safer Sex: talk about “the first time”, infections and pregnancy.
