Daily Physical Activity

Since 2006, all Elementary Schools in Ontario are required to provide children in grades 1 to 8 with at least 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous daily physical activity (DPA).

The 2009 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth state that several studies report that increased physical fitness and active living opportunities have positive effectives on academic performance through:

  • Improvements in memory, concentration and attention span
  • Improvements in grades and test scores
  • Increased self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image
  • Reduced misconduct behaviours at school
  • Increased feelings of school connectedness
  • Facilitating the inclusion of children with developmental or learning differences
